How to get your thrills at sea this summer (The Telegraph)

Keeping the kids happy on board goes a long way towards making a stress-free holiday for the whole family. Cruise companies know this very well and the bigger lines are forever dreaming up new and exhilarating experiences that will thrill the big kids too.

From the tallest slide and the longest race track at sea, to an airborne cycling experience and open-air laser tag, these are just some of the most thrilling activities for passengers on cruise ships.

Which ones are you brave enough to try?

Ultimate Abyss

Best for: Daredevil sliders

Could you launch yourself onto the tallest side at sea? At 45 metres above sea level, the approach to Ultimate Abyss – a glass-floor platform ten decks high – is almost as fearsome as the ride itself. The start is a black hole which pulls you down into a 28-metre serpentine-type drop as streaks of LED light stream above your head. The whole experience lasts 13 seconds, it’s free to ride and kids need to be 49 inches tall (around eight years old).

Try it: Ultimate Abyss is on Royal Caribbean’s Symphony of the Seas and Harmony of the Seas.

Laser tag

Best for: Fun-seeking groups of friends or family

Can you avoid being zapped in this abandoned space station? Attention to detail makes this outdoor laser tag course an exciting space to explore, although it’s arguably more atmospheric at night than it is during the day. Players compete in two teams and while a few shots will defeat a foe, everyone has limitless lives, so you can return to battle. It costs $5 (£3.70) for a ten-minute session and there aren’t any age or height restrictions.

Try it: Laser Tag is on board Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Bliss and Norwegian Joy.
